ABOUT SMITH WIGGLESWORTH
Smith Wigglesworth had a plumbing business in Bradford, England. Every Tuesday he would take people to Leeds to a group who practiced divine healing because they could not persuade Smith that the people could be healed in Bradford. Smith's wife Polly was healed in Leeds.
One day the leaders decided to go to the Keswick Convention and leave Smith in charge of the meetings at Bradford. Reluctantly Smith agreed. He hoped to persuade another to preach but each person he asked insisted that he must do it himself.
In that meeting, as Smith preached, he could not remember what he said but fifteen came out for healing. The first man was instantly healed after prayer. No one was more surprised than Smith himself. This encouraged the others to believe God and they were all healed. Smith said that it was not his faith but God helping in his hour of need. As a result, healing meetings were started in Bradford.
The work grew and they moved to other premises in Bowland Street. The text at the front read, "I am the Lord that healeth thee" and was an inspiration to many. A brother with a healing ministry came and was invited home for tea. Polly asked, "What would you think of a man who preaches divine healing, yet he himself uses medical means every day?" "I should say that man did not fully trust the Lord" was the answer. After the meal Smith told that he had suffered from hemorrhoids since childhood and used salts every day. They agreed to trust God for healing and, from that time forward, his system functioned naturally without any means whatsoever.

THEIR PROMISE
After this, Smith and his wife, Polly made a pledge to God, "From henceforth no medicine, no doctors, no drugs of any kind shall come into our house." Not long afterwards, Smith was gripped by a violent pain and was brought home. He and Polly prayed all night but, as he was worse, he thought it was his "home call." Smith reminded her of their agreement that, if one received a "home call," the other would send for the doctor to avoid the embarrassment of an inquest and the condemnation of outsiders.
The doctor diagnosed Smith with appendicitis in an advanced state. The only hope would be an immediate operation but his body was probably too weak. The doctor left, promising to return later. An elderly lady and a young man came and prayed. The young man laid his hands on Smith and cried, "Come out, devil, in the name of Jesus." Smith testified, "To my surprise the devil came out and I felt as well as I had ever been." He went downstairs and told his surprised wife, "I am healed." Answering a lady who left an urgent message in need for a plumber Smith went to help her.
While he was out the doctor returned and pronounced, "They will bring him back a corpse!" That "corpse" preached the gospel in many parts of the world for another 40 years. He was instrumental in bringing thousands of people to salvation, baptism in the Spirit and healing in God. About twenty people were raised from the dead during Smith's ministry. He believed great trials lead to a deeper experience with God. "Only melted gold is minted" was one of his sayings.
HIS EARLY LIFE
Smith was born in 1859 and at the age of seven he was working twelve hours a day with his father to supplement the family finances. As a result he had little education. He was born again at eight and immediately sought to win others to Jesus Christ. His mother was his first convert.
Smith was called by God to, "Come out." First from the Methodist, then the Anglican, Brethren, Salvation Army and so on. He ministered in Elim and Assemblies of God but he remained independent of any denomination.
His wife Polly was a great help, teaching him to read and write. Smith slipped back when his business prospered and God used her to restore him. He had a violent temper but God gave him victory.
In 1907, when he was 48, he was baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues. His wife was a good preacher and she had tried without much success to help Smith. She, and many others, were surprised at his fluency after the baptism in the Spirit.
HIS PREACHING
Smith read little other than the Bible. He waited for the Spirit to direct him to a particular passage for his ministry. He often gave a short message in tongues which he immediately interpreted.
Frequently he would quote a chorus. "Only believe" was one of his favorites. Another, which was his testimony, was, "I know the Lord laid His hand on me. Filled! A flowing, quickening, moving flame of God.
Some examples of God's healing power would be related. He believed his sermons should make his hearers either glad or mad! He would say, "If you do not progress every day, you are backsliding.
When he was preaching in Norway, the town hall was full and thousands were outside. He had prayed for something different to happen. God said to him, "If you will ask Me, I will give you every soul." Smith knew it was God but was slow to accept. He did ask and the Spirit swept over the place. He had never seen anything like it. Many cried for mercy and he was convinced that God gave him every soul.
FAITH WHEN WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND
Although Smith believed all sickness was from the devil and everyone could be healed, there were some difficulties. The untimely death of his wife in 1913 was a real blow. He commanded death to give her up. She said, "Smith - the Lord wants me." "If the Lord wants you, I will not hold you" was his response but he greatly missed her.
His daughter, Alice Salter frequently traveled with him after Polly's death. Alice was deaf and was never healed. His youngest son, George, went to be with the Lord in 1915.
Early in the 1930's an X-ray revealed Smith was suffering from kidney stones. An immediate operation was necessary to avoid a painful illness and eventual death. "Doctor, the God who made this body is the one who can cure it. No knife shall ever cut it as long as I live" was his response. He endured six years of pain before he was delivered. Later he suffered from sciatica which made walking painful and often, he was more sick than the people he prayed for! At seventy eight he ruptured badly and in 1944 he suffered a slight stroke. He was quickened in 1945 and was able to chair the Easter convention at Preston.
What's the point of praying for people if we don't expect them to be healed?" So said healing evangelist Gypsy William Lee during his recent visit to Kensington Temple in February. "When I pray, I expect God to heal", continued William.
Perhaps this is why William has seen such outstanding examples of God's healing power throughout his ministry. People all around the country have been healed of all kinds of sickness, illness and disease, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, terminal cancer, meningitis, blindness and deafness.
Reading some of the healing stories of Gypsy William Lee you'd think you're in the pages of the book of Acts. This is testament to the powerful way in which God has been using him. And we are believing - and expecting - for a similar New Testament outpouring this month of March as we hold our miracle crusade with William Lee and give room to the Holy Spirit to do whatever he wants to do.
The ripple effect Virtually every night this month (except on Mondays) William Lee will be holding revival healing meetings at KT. The onemonth long miracle crusade is in response to a vision that God showed William about the strategic importance of London as the capital city. William believes that what happens at KT this month of March will cause a "ripple effect" which will influence the entire nation.
A foretaste
And God has already given us a taster of what to expect during this crusade. We invited William to minister during our Sunday services on 17th February as a precursor to the month of miracles. Many people responded to the gospel throughout the day and during our 7pm service William actually laid hands on the sick. A number of significant testimonies of healing were reported, including many miracles related to ear problems.
Deaf from birth
Jingle Olarte, for instance, is a 33-year-old KT member who was deaf in her left ear from birth. She says that even if people screamed in her left ear, she couldn't hear. She couldn't hear phone conversations or listen to headphones from her left ear - basically she had not heard a sound in her left ear her entire life. But as William put his fingers in her ears, she started to shake. She sensed the power of God immediately but went back to her seat. It was there that her friend asked her what had happened. At that point she realised that her friend was speaking to her via her left ear - she could hear through her left ear for the very first time in her life!
A 'rough diamond'
Gypsy William Lee is probably not what you'd expect of a healing evangelist. A self-confessed 'rough diamond' who couldn't read or write when he got saved because he only went to school for 3 months, he had a radical encounter with Christ which totally transformed his life from the brink of utter disaster. He himself is an argument for the existence of God and his life is a testimony of what God can do through one ordinary man who is totally yielded to him. His own inimitable style of preaching is matched by his wonderful sense of humour. William preaches the pure, simple gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit - and God uses him in remarkable ways.
This month of March bring unsaved friends, bring people needing healing, bring sceptics, and bring yourself - expect a mighty demonstration of the power of God.
Heaven's Gates, Hell's Flames
Also, during the Easter period from Thursday 20th March to Sunday 23rd March (7pm), we will be putting on another production of Heaven's Gates, Hell's Flames. This drama is a powerful tool which has seen literally thousands of people make commitments to Christ all over the world. The gospel message is presented in black and white as the reality of heaven and hell emanates from every scene. The play has a proven history at KT and has been one of our single most effective evangelistic tools - we have seen hundreds of people impacted with the life-saving message of Jesus Christ each and every time we have put it on.
Resurrection: Fact or Fiction?
In addition, on Sunday 16th March at 7pm, we have Professor Gary Habermas - one of the leading authorities in the world on the resurrection - live and in person at KT. The validity of the entire Christian message stands or falls on the resurrection - and not surprisingly this is one of the areas which is coming under increasing attack by sceptics. It is essential that every Christian knows how to defend this truth. Professor Habermas has authored over 16 books on the subject and will present the outstanding evidence for the resurrection of Christ.
Don't miss the opportunity!
This March is set to be one of the most significant months in our history as a church. Strategise as cell groups as to how you will use the various events. Don't miss the opportunity! Invite unsaved friends and family, invite neighbours and colleagues, invite acquaintances, invite strangers - expect souls to be saved, expect bodies to be healed and expect your miracle
As it is the Month of Miracles at KT, we are featuring an article by John G. Lake, one of the most powerful Pentecostal healing evangelist of the 20th century. His life's work spanned two continents and deliverances as well as teh establishment of hundreds of churches and ministries.
Atonement through the grace of God is scientific in its application. Jesus used many methods to heal the sick. All were scientific. Science is the discovery of how God does things. Jesus laid his hands upon the sick in obedience to the law of contact and transmission. Contact of his hands with the sick one permitted the Spirit of God in him to flow into the sick person.
The sick woman who touched his clothes found that the Spirit emanated from his person. She touched the "hem of his garment" and the Spirit flashed into her. She was made whole. This is a scientific process.
Paul, knowing this law, laid his hands upon handkerchiefs and aprons. The Bible says that when they were laid upon the sick they were healed and that demons went out of those possessed. Materialists have said this was superstition. It is entirely scientific. The Spirit of God emanating from Paul transformed the handkerchiefs into 'storage batteries' of Holy Spirit power. When they were laid upon the sick they surcharged the body and healing was the result. (Acts 19:12)
Firstly, this demonstrates that the Spirit of God is a tangible substance, a heavenly materiality. Secondly, it is capable of being stored in the substance of cloth, as demonstrated in the garments of Jesus or the handkerchiefs of Paul. Thirdly, it will transmit power from handkerchiefs to the sick person. Fourthly, its action in the sick man was so powerful the disease departed. The demonized were also delivered. And fifthly, both the sick and the insane were delivered and healed by this method.
Men received Jesus Christ into their hearts as one receives a lover. It is an affectionate relationship. Men obey him, because they have received him affectionately. He has become their soul's lover. His love and power in them redeems them from sin and sickness and eventually, we are promised in his Word, he will redeem us from death also. Redemption from sin, sickness, and death constitutes man's deliverance from bondage to Satan and his kingdom and establishes the kingdom of heaven.
The power of the Name
Jesus called his twelve disciples and commanded upon them power and authority to cast out devils and heal disease (Luke 9). He superseded this by declaring: "If you shall ask any thing in my Name, I will do it." (John 14:14)
The first was a limited 'power of attorney'. The second was unlimited. This unlimited 'power of attorney' was authorised before his crucifixion. It was to become effective when the Holy Ghost came. (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:8)
On the Day of Pentecost, this 'power of attorney' was made fully operative. The Spirit came. First, legally; they had his Word. Then, vitally; he sent his Spirit.
Peter and John instantly grasped the significance of his name. Passing into the temple they met a beggar-cripple. He was 40 years old and had been crippled from birth. Peter commanded: "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." Heaven's lightning struck the man. He leaped to his feet, whole. A multitude rushed up. They demanded, "In what name, by what name, by what power have ye done this?" Peter and John replied, "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye slew, whom God raised up." Matchless name! The secret of power was in it. When they used the name, power struck. The dynamite of heaven exploded.
Peter and John were hustled to jail. The church prayed for them in "the Name." They were released. They went to church. The entire church prayed that signs and wonders might be done. How did they pray? In the Name. They used it legally. The vital response was instantaneous. The place was shaken by an earthquake. Tremendous Name!
Jesus commanded, "Go ye into all the world." What for? To proclaim that Name. To use that Name. To baptise believers. How? In the Name (His authority; what he commanded). Amazing Name! In it was concentrated the combined authority resident in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Almighty Name!
The apostles used the Name. It worked. The deacons at Samaria used the Name. The fire flashed. Believers everywhere, forever, were commanded to use it. The Name detonated around the world.
More Bibles are sold today [the 1920s] than any other 100 books. Why? The Name is in it. Its finality - "At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess!" Prayer in this Name gets answers. The Moravians prayed. The greatest revival till that time hit the world.
The grace and love of God in the soul opens the nature to God. When they asked of the blind man, "What do you think of him?" He replied, "He is a prophet." Later, Jesus found him, and said to him, "Dost thou believe on the Son of God?" The man asked, "Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?" Jesus answered, "I that speak unto thee am he."
Men received Jesus Christ into their hearts as one receives a lover. It is an affectionate relationship. Men obey him, because they have received him affectionately. He has become their soul's lover.
The apostles used the Name. It worked. The deacons at Samaria used the Name. The fire flashed. Believers everywhere, forever, were commanded to use it. The Name detonated around the world.
The struggle of the centuries has been to free the soul from narrow interpretations. Jesus has sometimes been made to appear as a little bigot; sometimes as an impostor. The world is still waiting to see him as he is. Jesus is magnificent, Jesus the giant, Jesus the compassionate, Jesus the dynamic - the wonder of the centuries.
Take the shackles off God Take the shackles off God. Let him have a chance to bless the mankind without limitations. As a missionary I have seen the healing of thousands of heathen. Thus was Christ's love and compassion for a lost world revealed. And thus the writer was assisted into the larger vision of a world Redeemer whose hand and heart are extended to God's big world and every man, saint and sinner, is invited to behold and love him.
In one of the letters received from readers, this question is asked, "Why are not all persons healed instantly - as Jesus healed?" The writer of this letter is mistaken in thinking that Jesus always healed instantly. A case in point is the healing of the ten lepers; "as they went they were cleansed." The healing virtue was administered. The healing process became evident later. Again, Jesus laid his hands on a blind man, then inquired, "What do you see?" The man replied, "I see men as trees walking." His sight was still imperfect. Then Jesus laid his hands on him the second time - and he saw clearly.
Healing is by degree, based on two conditions. First, the degree of healing virtue administered. Second, the degree of faith that gives action and power to the virtue administered.
"The word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it." (Hebrews 4:2)
The miracles of Jesus have been the battleground for centuries. Men have devoted their lives in an endeavour to break down faith in miracles. More believe in miracles today than ever before. Pseudo-science declares miracles impossible. Yet the biggest men in the scientific world are believers in the supernatural and know that miracles are the discovery, the utilisation of which the material science knows nothing.
The miracle realm is man's natural realm. He is by creation, the companion of the miracle-working God. Sin dethroned man from the miracle-working realm, but through grace he is coming into his own.
It has been hard for us to grasp the principles of this life of faith. In the beginning, man's spirit was the dominant force in the world. When he sinned his mind became dominant; sin dethroned the spirit and crowned the intellect. But grace is restoring the spirit to its place of dominion. When man comes to realise this, he will live in the realm of the supernatural without effort. No longer will faith be a struggle, but a normal living in the realm of God. The spiritual realm places man where communion with God is a normal experience. Miracles are then his native breath. No one knows to what extent the mind and the spirit can be developed. We have been slow to come to a realization that man is a spirit and his spirit nature is his basic nature. We have sought to educate him along educational lines, utterly ignoring the spiritual, so man has become a self-centred, self-seeking being. Man has lost his sense of relationship and responsibility toward God and man. This makes him lawless. We cannot ignore the spiritual side of man without magnifying the intellectual and the physical. To do this without the restraint of the spirit is to unleash sin and give it dominance over the whole man. There must be a culture of development of the spiritual nature to a point where it can enjoy fellowship with the Father God. It is above mind, a God is above nature.
Man's intellect is ever conscious of supernatural forces that he cannot understand. He senses the spirit realm and longs for its freedom and creative power, but he cannot enter until changed from self and sin; the spirit enthroned and in action rather than the intellect - spirit above both mind and matter.
The life of God, the Spirit of God, the nature of God, are sufficient for every need of man. In the highest sense of the word, he is a real Christian whose body, soul and spirit alike are filled with the life of God.
Healing in any department of the nature, whether spirit, soul, or body is but a means to an end. The object of healing is health, abiding health of body, soul and spirit. The healing of the Spirit unites the spirit of man to God forever. The healing of the soul corrects psychic disorder and brings the soul processes into harmony with the mind of God. And the healing of the body completes the union of man with God when the Holy Spirit possesses all.
Operating in Faith
Colin Dye
Without faith the impossible remains impossible - only faith can make the impossible possible! Faith is the ability to reach into the invisible realm and lay hold of God's reality. It is the hand of faith that will bring the kingdom of God into this world.
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1)
Jesus said that the kingdom of God is at hand and that we need to take hold of it by faith - otherwise his kingdom will remain at hand and never in your hand.
The Bible teaches that we can take hold of God's kingdom by faith. Let me illustrate how this works with a real-life example. A few years ago we were facing a financial challenge - it seems that there is never enough money to do all God has called us to do! In a leaders' meeting I declared that we would see a 25% increase in our offerings within a year. And indeed, the next 12 months brought a 25% increase in our offerings! When I met with our bank manager, he looked puzzled and said that it was impossible to have such an increase. I told him: "Of course it is impossible but with God the impossible becomes possible!"
It is possible to have faith so real that it seems like you are already holding the substance of the things you are hoping for. In those situations it might appear that it is you who has taken the initiative from God. You proclaim: "This will happen!" and it happens. But at close inspection you see that you initiated nothing but it was God urging you to speak. If God is not in it and behind it, it will never happen!
There are four principles when it comes to operating in the kind of faith that is able to break into the supernatural realm to lay hold of God's reality.
Faith principle 1: Hear your faith word from God
Faith is a process that starts from believing but it isn't about believing in just anything. For faith to operate, you need to hear a specific word from God. Faith isn't a mental ability but a supernatural conviction concerning a specific word from God. It always has a specific content.
"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)
Here the apostle Paul uses the Greek word rhema that implies a specific word from God that is applicable to your situation. It is God's personal word for you. It isn't just one of the thousands of promises in the Bible but the one God has specifically spoken to you!
If, for example, you believe God has a provision of a car for you then he will already have chosen the right one - a specific year, model, colour and so on - that meets your need. You might be content with any old car and decide to buy just any old car. But that might be a different car from the one God wants to provide. Would you want to drive any old car, or the one God provides? A specific word from God will entail specific details. These make the word tangible to your faith. Your need is always specific so God's answer to your need will always be specific.
This principle applies to healing ministry and we can clearly see it operating in the healing ministry of Jesus. Jesus didn't stand on a mountaintop in Galilee and proclaim healing to the nation. Instead, he looked for the guidance from the Father.
He said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. (John 5:19)
This is why Jesus went to the pool of Bethesda and ministered the Father's healing to an individual, a paralysed man. The Father had guided the Son there to heal that particular man. The healing happened because Jesus knew how to cooperate with the Father. Jesus modelled the healing ministry to us. Following this principle, in public meetings I tend to operate the gift of healing through specific words of knowledge. I simply cooperate with whatever the Father already wants to do.
Faith principle 2: See with the eyes of faith
When you believe a specific word from God for you, your eyes will begin see in the spiritual realm. People say that seeing is believing but, when it comes to faith, believing is seeing. When you have faith, you will see a situation through the eyes of faith - that is, how God says it should be - and not how it appears to other people.
When Jesus chose his disciples he didn't use his natural eyes, he chose his disciples because of the vision the Father had for their lives. For us, this means that we should stop looking at our cell members through natural eyes and instead use the eyes of faith, and then we will begin to understand how God sees them!
I have seen this principle work in my ministry. There was a time when God was teaching me how to operate in the supernatural. I was travelling and went to sleep in my hotel room as I had a long day of ministry ahead. I closed my eyes and saw something that I can only describe as a movie. In that movie, I was standing in an auditorium where people brought to me a deaf man I knew to be from the congregation. I saw myself speaking certain words, blow into his ear and put my finger in. I woke up and began to pray but the Holy Spirit told me: "I didn't wake you up for you to pray for him. I have already told you what I will do. I woke you up for you." Then the Holy Spirit began to minister to me.
The following day, everything happened exactly as it had in my dream and I did what the Holy Spirit had told me to do - and the man was completely healed!
Seeing with the eyes of faith is simply seeing what God already sees. If you want to grow your faith, ask God to show you what he sees!
Faith principle 3: Speak out your faith word!
After I had the dream I still had to obey and speak out the word of God. It was only then that the word became an active, creative word that brought the real healing. We can boldly speak out the promises God has given to us because he is faithful to his word. Jesus said to his disciples, "Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says." (Mark 11:23)
It is a necessary precondition for your faith to operate that you believe the specific word God has spoken to you. But that is not enough. You must also speak out your faith word. The mountain Jesus refers to stands for an impossible obstacle between you and God's will. There will always be obstacles in the way when you seek to do the will of God - and only speaking out in faith will remove these obstacles.
God has full confidence in his word. You can also receive his confidence in his word. When you speak with his confidence what you say will come to pass. This has nothing to do with some 'faith techniques' or magic. This is simply speaking out loud what God has already said he will do.
Faith principle 4: Put your faith into action
James 2:20 says, "But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?"
James isn't referring to saving faith but to faith that works. You don't need works to get saved but unless you put your faith into action it will remain unfruitful. Both faith without action and action without faith are unfruitful. This year, put your faith into action. If you never preach the gospel, you will never see salvations. If you never invite people to your cell, no one will ever come!
Just remember: Faith tested is faith triumphant! Testing your faith develops your character and also your faith. To be triumphant, you must have something to triumph over! Often, receiving your victory goes down to straightforward determination. Had Naaman not dipped into Jordan seven times he wouldn't have received his healing (2 Kings 5). Had the Israelites walked round Jericho for six days instead of seven, the walls of the city wouldn't have come down (Joshua 6).
If you learn to apply these four faith principles into your life, the walls of your 'Jericho' will tumble down, as what seems impossible becomes possible.
